RSHE at Upwell Academy
Our intent is to deliver a high-quality, age-appropriate Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum that equips pupils with the knowledge, skills, and values to form healthy relationships, stay safe, and thrive in modern society. We aim to:
- Meet statutory requirements and safeguard all pupils.
- Promote respect, equality, and inclusivity.
- Provide accurate, non-judgemental information using correct scientific vocabulary.
- Build resilience, emotional literacy, and confidence to seek help when needed.

Implementation
RSHE is taught using resources from Norfolk County Council's Educator Solutions and supplements the PSHE curriculum resources from Pol-Ed. We use a spiral curriculum approach from EYFS to Year 6, revisiting six core themes at increasing depth:
- My Feelings – emotional literacy and empathy.
- My Body – growth, puberty, hygiene, and reproduction.
- My Relationships – healthy friendships, respect, and consent.
- My Beliefs – challenging stereotypes and understanding identity.
- My Rights and Responsibilities – privacy, safety, and legal frameworks.
- Asking for Help – confidence to seek support.
Delivery includes:
- RSHE lessons are delivered as part of our PSHE curriculum in the summer term as the children are the most mature and staff will know the children well.
- Inclusive resources reflecting diversity in families, gender identity, and culture.
- Use of distancing techniques and question boxes to create a safe learning environment.
- Parental engagement through consultation and information sessions.
- Staff training to ensure consistency and confidence in teaching RSHE.
Impact
The impact of our RSHE curriculum is measured through:
- Pupil voice – feedback on relevance and confidence in applying learning.
- Embedded assessment – within lesson activities to monitor progress.
- Behaviour and safeguarding indicators – improved emotional wellbeing, respectful relationships, and reduced incidents of bullying.
- Parental feedback – positive engagement and understanding of RSHE provision.
By the end of KS2, pupils will:
- Understand body changes and reproduction using correct terminology.
- Recognise healthy and unhealthy relationships and know how to respond.
- Demonstrate respect for diversity and challenge stereotypes.
- Know how to stay safe online and offline, including awareness of FGM and consent.
- Feel confident to seek help independently.
