Weekly Update 20th October 2022

Year R

Wow! Well done Kerr Class you have made it to the end of your very first half term at school. It has been a super busy week. We started out by visiting Petite Street where we went on a coach and was able to dress up as police officers, entertainers, chefs, supermarket workers, firefighters, mechanics, gardeners and much, much more. It was lovely to hear the children using language rich words to describe their roles. In English this week we have been looking at the author Roald Dahl, ready for our very special day today celebrating the life and works of him. We looked at Esio Tro and the characters in the story. In maths we have continued to count carefully, and subitize numbers. We have also been learning about ‘being thankful’ and very much enjoyed the Harvest Festival in the church yesterday. In phonics we have learnt ‘b’ - down the laces to the heel and round the toe and ‘f’ - down the flower across the flower. Another super busy week and we are all super tired and in need of a week off. Thank goodness it is half term! Enjoy!

Year 1

Wow! What a fantastic week in Year 1! In Maths we looked at 3D shapes, described their features and went on a hunt to see if we could find shapes around the classroom. In English we innovated the Gruffalo description by changing it to our own monsters. We worked really hard and thought of some fantastic adjectives to describe our monsters with. We thoroughly enjoyed the harvest festival yesterday! We were able to walk to the church from the school and had a great time singing and hearing what others are thankful for at this time of year. We also loved dressing up as our favourite Roald Dahl characters! There were lots of Matildas and Willy Wonkas, as well as more Roald Dahl favourites. We completed a very special piece of independent writing where we wrote a character description for either Miss Honey or Miss Trunchball.

We have had a super first half term in Year 1 and can’t wait to see everyone again after the holidays!

Year 2

I cannot believe it is half term already!

We have begun this week adding and subtracting three single digit numbers and we moved onto adding two-digit numbers as well. This can be a bit tricky but we used our number bonds to help us. addition and subtraction calculations in maths. In English we have had great fun using non-fiction texts and on-line resources to research facts all about hedgehogs and we have begun to draft fact-files. We have carefully considered what we have learnt in science to support our writing too. We continued to work on our communication skills in PSHE. We had great fun listening to and learning songs in music and we all did some fantastic singing at the Harvest Festival on Wednesday. We have thoroughly enjoyed Roald Dahl Day today; we’ve thoroughly enjoyed completing Mr Twit’s yucky challenge too!

Year 3

What a busy final week it has been! And it doesn’t seem possible that it is half term already!

We have begun to use the formal written method for addition and subtraction calculations in maths. In English we have had great fun writing our fabulous instructions for How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth! We continued to work on our communication skills in PSHE. We had great fun listening to and learning songs in music and we all did some fantastic singing at the Harvest Festival on Wednesday. We are hoping to get lots more done today, including some brilliant Roald Dahl writing, some printing and our end of unit quizzes before we move on to our new topics after half term.

Year 4

In science this week we have been classifying invertebrates. We used the ipads and a branch database to make classification keys. We enjoyed doing this. We have been learning our 7 and 9 times tables this week. We are slowly getting quicker. In English we have been reading about a wizard who gets his spell wrong. We have been discussing the words used and how we find the evidence in the writing for our ideas. We enjoyed our walk to the Methodist Church for our Harvest Festival. We sang beautifully. Our favourite song is Big Red Combine Harvester. This morning we have been inventing our own sweets and chocolates for Mr Willy Wonka. We have then written about them using fabulous words; different sentence starts and remembering to use our full stops and capital letters.

Year 5

This half terms seems to have zoomed by! It has certainly been a busy one with lots going on! This week we have been writing our alternative endings to an episode of Treasure Island. We worked hard to build suspense but also ensure we used a range of expanded noun phrases and relative clauses as well as similes and ‘show don’t tell’ vocabulary to help create a vivid image in the reader’s mind. In maths, we looked at problem solving using addition and subtraction. We also finished our history unit on Baghdad this week, looking into what happened when the Mongols attacked and completed destroyed the city. We enjoyed our walk to the Methodist church on Wednesday afternoon for our Harvest festival. Big Red Combine Harvester was definitely our favourite song to perform! Today we celebrated Ronald Dahl day and wrote some fantastic character descriptions of the Grand High Witch!

Our homework expectations remain over the half term holiday, as we want the children to continue the great job they have started in the last few weeks. The homework period will run from today (Thursday 20th October) through until Friday 4th November. As this is a two-week period, the children will have homework set to cover the two weeks.

This will still be in the form of the 5 areas:

- 2x comprehension activity pages

- 4x times tables activity pages

- 6x reading at home entries

- spellings practices regularly (at least 2 photos uploaded to dojo at different points)

- Sumdog task.

Year 6

Well Year 6, I can’t believe how quickly this half term has flown by! What a busy but brilliant half term it has been. Well done everyone for your hard work and effort. In English this week, we have finished writing our non-chronological reports on animals in WW1, we then edited and published them. In Maths, we have finished our unit on the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) by learning about the order of operations – BODMAS – and applying our knowledge to a range of different style questions. In Science, we have continued our unit on the human body; learning about the components that make up our blood and what their roles are.

Today, we have celebrated our Roald Dahl Day, with some fantastic costumes seen across the school. Today, was completed the Big Write, writing a letter from Matilda’s p.o.v. explaining her extraordinary life and experiences.
