Our annual celebration took place on Thursday, March 6, after a special assembly led by Mrs Fisher, our English Lead our children spent the day enjoying curriculum linked workshops across the school led by our class teachers. This year’s theme at Upwell was ‘Fables’ and worked well with the National theme of ‘Read Your Way’ which aims to encourage children to see reading as a fun activity, rather than something they have to do as part of their school studies.

Our mission as always, was to try to inspire a new reason to read and encourage that love of reading. The day was based on an Icelandic Folktale, where the story links to true beliefs of how their landscape became so treacherous. Photos of Iceland were shared and this increased interest. The other activities were drama, - linked to a mash-up of famous folktales, writing - creating a folktale, art- designing and making a peg character, construction/DT - making a bridge for the billy goats gruff to use, ICT - creating a character, and geography - map skills and drawing.

The staff and children had a wonderful day, and feedback has been incredibly positive from all. Now to start planning next year! There were some clear favourites when it comes to characters. Harry Potter continues to be a popular choice, decades after the books were released. Other classics include the Gruffalo, Stick Man and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
