Quick Sticks Hockey Tournament

Upwell Academy Shines at Quick Sticks Hockey Tournament

Seven enthusiastic Year 5 pupils from Upwell Academy represented the school with pride at the Quick Sticks Hockey Tournament hosted by Pelican Hockey Academy at Lynnsport. The event included representatives from England Hockey, creating a memorable and prestigious experience for the team.

Despite this being Upwell Academy’s first appearance at the tournament, the pupils quickly settled into the occasion. The sunny conditions on Astroturf Pitch 2 provided the perfect backdrop for an exciting day of competitive hockey.

Strong Start Against Hillcrest Hornets

Upwell opened the day against a well-organised Hillcrest Hornets team. Although the match resulted in a 3–0 defeat, the team showed resilience and promising play. Eleanor H, Monty W and Summer E stood out for their passing skills, movement into space and determined challenges.

The tournament used a fast-paced format with nine-minute matches, teams of four and rolling substitutions at three and six minutes, ensuring every player enjoyed valuable time on the pitch.

Growing Confidence Against South Wootton

In their second game, Upwell displayed increased confidence against a strong South Wootton side. Cruz S, Killian C and Sofia P linked well to create attacking opportunities. Although South Wootton converted two close-range chances, Leo E continued to apply pressure until the final whistle.

Impressive Victory Over West Lynn

The third match brought an outstanding performance from Upwell. With excellent teamwork and determination, the team secured a 5–0 win against West Lynn. Goals were scored by Eleanor (2), Killian, Monty and Cruz. This victory earned Upwell a well-deserved place in the playoff for third and fourth position.

A Spirited Playoff Against Glebe House

The playoff match saw Upwell deliver one of their strongest displays of the day. Killian scored two purposeful goals, and the whole team showed exceptional resilience. Despite a 5–2 result in favour of Glebe House, Upwell’s teamwork and effort shone throughout the match.

Final Group Match Decided by a Late Whistle

The final match against Hillcrest Hotshots was a lively, end-to-end contest. A win would have secured a place in the final, and Upwell created several excellent chances with sharp passing and inventive movement. In the final moments, Killian fired the ball into the bottom corner, but the whistle had already been blown for an injury on another pitch. The goal did not stand, and the match finished 0–0.

Although disappointed, the team displayed admirable sportsmanship and accepted the decision with maturity.

A Day of Achievement

At the end of a busy day, the Upwell Academy players were full of smiles. Many expressed a desire to continue playing hockey after enjoying the sport so much. Their energy, teamwork and determination were evident in every match.

Well done to all involved. Certificates are on their way.
