A Superb Performance from Upwell Academy’s Year 5/6 Mixed Football Team
What a fantastic day for Upwell Academy’s Year 5/6 mixed football team! Looking resplendent in their brand-new kit, the players posed for photographs while waiting for the coach under sunny skies, though the pitch was heavy after recent rain.
Upwell approached their opening match against Nelson United with a few nerves but quickly settled, producing some impressive moves. Nelson struck first, but Upwell responded brilliantly with a Cruz equaliser. Jed was outstanding in goal—calm, confident, and making crucial saves. Despite their efforts, Nelson snatched a late tap-in, ending the game 2–1.
Next came Denver Dynamos in a thrilling end-to-end contest. Upwell grew in confidence as Isaac made an early save and Killian dazzled with fancy footwork. Jake, irrepressible as ever, skipped through the defence to score a superb opener. Riley worked tirelessly in midfield, setting up Cruz for a second goal and sealing a 2–0 victory.
A tight battle followed against Hillcrest Hotspurs. Upwell showed grit and determination, earning a 1–1 draw thanks to Killian’s top-corner strike and Ruby’s relentless effort. After a bye, Upwell faced a well-organised Nelson Athletic side. An early goal put them behind, and despite Riley bravely playing on after a ball to the face, fatigue set in and they conceded again in the final seconds.
The standout match of the day was against Denver Rangers. Jake was unstoppable, scoring a hat-trick despite a painful fall on his elbow after a low tackle. Jed even tried his hand outfield, and Isaac coolly tapped in the fourth goal for a 4–0 triumph! Every player wore the captain’s armband at least once, showing true commitment and teamwork.
The final challenge came against Hillcrest Harriers, who pressed hard and scored twice—one a thunderous strike, the other a goalmouth scramble. Upwell battled bravely but fell 2–0. They remained gracious in defeat, shaking hands with opponents and thanking referees—a credit to their sportsmanship.
End-of-day tally: 3 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw. Considering they were a player down, Upwell should be immensely proud. They showed maturity, resilience, and incredible team spirit throughout.
Player of the Day: A tough choice, but Jake earned the accolade for his relentless energy and determination to chase every ball.
Well done, Upwell Blues!
