On Wednesday, Year 6 joined the team at King’s Lynn Fire Station as part of their annual Crucial Crew event. Despite only being an afternoon, we were able to visit several helpful services, who shared information on how to keep ourselves and others’ safe.

RNLI We learnt about being WATER SMART. Something which is crucial for us living so close to the river. We learnt that if we find ourselves in trouble in water, to float on our backs in a star shape until we are rescued. Also, to never go into water to help someone else – as much as we would want to.

Norfolk Resilience Forum got us thinking about events which might be considered at risk, or not at risk. We discussed what items would be useful to pack if the local area was flooded and we had to seek refuge elsewhere. The lovely ladies explained to us, that in such an instance, to listen to either radio 2 or 4 who keep the public updated.

Brave Futures explained CONSENT to us. We buddied up with someone who we wouldn’t normally work with to identify what CONSENT means and that we can say “No” if we do not want to do something.

Norfolk Police led a discussion on online safety; exploring how the internet can be amazing, but we need to be careful and ensure our settings allow only people who know in person to access our accounts. We left the workshop knowing that our trusted adults are always there to listen and help, but Childline have adult manning their phones 24/7 on 0800 1111.

The Fire Service hosted a quiz show style talk regarding preventing fires. Having listened carefully to various questions, we had to identify which box contained the correct answer. The Fire Service asked us how often frequently smoke alarms should be tested – once a week!

St John Ambulance showed us how to help someone who was unconscious but still breathing. Having watched the demonstration, we buddied up and practised placing each other into the recovery position.

East Anglia Air Ambulance explained how to resuscitate a casualty if they were not breathing. The friendly staff modelled how to give chest compressions before allowing us time to practise on the dolls. We were also shown how to use a defibrillator should the need arise. The staff finished the session by telling us to download the ‘What3words’ app, which has covered the earth in 3m grid lines and given each square an individual combination of three words which is unique to the square that you are in. They explained how this is extremely useful if you do not know where you are and the emergency services would be able to locate you no matter where you were.

Kingfisher Class learnt a great deal and left equipped as a Crucial Crew member of the community!
