Year 5 Weekly Round Up Archive
28th May 2021
What a fabulous week we have had in Kookaburra class. We have completed our assessment with some amazing results, many children have doubled their scores!!
We have continued to read some more of our story Varjak Paw, problem solve in Maths, and find out how the American Revolution ended.
Over half term, please could you all have a uniform check, make sure the items are clearly named (jumpers/blazers). Check you haven't picked up anyone else's belongings by mistake (blazers/football boots).
Thank you again for all of your understanding, patience and support this half term. We hope you have a lovely half term.
Stay safe everyone, see you in June

It is time for our weekly round up again. In Maths this week, we have been revising the written methods for all 4 operations. We have realised again how important it is to be fluent at our times tables. It really does help. This revision will really help us with our maths assessments next week.
In English, we have continued our story of Varjak Paw, the cat on a mission. He has escaped the house, met a metal dog (which is actually a car) and met a new mysterious cat, called Holly. We have also completed the English assessments; GPS Questions, Spelling and Reading.
In the afternoons we have been busy learning about geysers and hot springs, how to treat a head injury, PE skills and researching facts about the American Revolution.
After half term, Mrs Johnson will choose two pupils each week to write our weekly round up together. I wonder who it will be...

We have made it! Today, we have finished our fractions unit, we have multiplied fractions and found fractions of an amount this week. The class have truly been resilient and worked so hard this week. I am a very proud teacher 🌟
In English, we have continued our story of Varjak Paw, there has been a family council, a confrontation and an escape this week. We have used the story to write our own relative clauses, infer what the characters feel and write a balanced argument. We even had a go at colour mixing painting our own Varjak Paw portraits in art. 🐱
In Science we have learnt about where and why earthquakes occur and how to measure them. We have looked at the first battle of the American Revolution. We have even had time for some French and PE.

Welcome to the first in a series of weekly round-ups. Each Friday we will post a short summary of all of the things we have been up to during the week.
What a busy week we have had. This week started with excitement as we had the opportunity to create our own short video. We used iMovie to sequence and edit all of our videos and photos we took last week. We added music, text and effects. We loved it!
This week in Maths, we have faced our nemesis fractions head on and as Mrs Johnson keeps saying 'smashed it'! We have added and subtracted with confidence and we feel great.
In English, we have started our new class text Varjak Paw by S.F. Said, a cat with mysterious 'ways' and intriguing ancestors. We have used our inference skills to find out more about him, predicted what we think is going to happen and enjoyed the first chapter. I wonder who the mysterious man is and why he has two black cats with him?
We have also learnt more about the work of NSPCC and Childline. How to Speak Out and Stay Safe! With guest appearances from Ant & Dec.
