Year 2 Long Term Plans

Theme 1 – Safari

Focus – Geography – vocabulary, map work, and science – food chains, habitats – using African safari as a base.


Meerkat Mail – letters, formal and informal writing.

Poems – animal descriptions, riddle, haiku, kennings

Story writing using Africa setting


Number – four operations problems

X and ÷ – designing transport for visitors – e.g. 5 rows (help to link them).

Measure – length and mass

Ordering height/ length of animals

Shape – patterns on animals


*explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive

* identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other

* identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats, including micro-habitats

* describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food.


*use basic geographical vocabulary (description of Africa and animal habitats on Safari)


Carnival of the animals – description of music and use of terms
